The 10 Keys to Optimizing Your Search Ranking

With thousands of sources, journals and blogs on the subject, search engine optimization is a rapidly evolving practice in the digital world and many marketers are struggling to find the right path.  Given this, we thought it would be helpful to narrow down all of the dialog into 10 easy tips to get you going. In this blog, we’ll present some easy to follow steps to help your website rank for your target keywords and phrases.  Most marketers with some understanding of web design and baseline SEO knowledge should be able to initiate these without any problem.

1.) Be sure links to your site and within your site use your keyword phrase. In other words, if your target is “blue widgets” then link to “blue widgets” instead of a “Click here” link.

2.) Focus on search phrases, not single keywords. A lways put your location in your text (“our Phoenix valve plant” not “our valve plant”) to help you get found in local searches.  And remember, use long tail phrases for blogging and key words in your sites content.

3.) Content is king. Well-written, focused and unique content that focuses on your primary keyword or keyword phrase will help boost your authority ranking among the search engines.  And remember, write to your audience, not to your products or services.

4.) Use keywords and keyword phrases appropriately in text links, image ALT attributes and even your domain name.

5.) Backlinks support authority. Build a network of quality backlinks to high quality websites that are relevant to your industry. As for backlinks, quality is more important than quantity.  If there is no good, logical reason for a site to link to you, you don’t want the link.

6.) Place unique, focused keywords in the title tag on every page of your site. If your desire is to include your company name, place it at the end of the title tag. Remember, the first 60 characters will be scanned. Without high brand recognition and retention, your business name will probably get few searches.

7.) Design your web site with SEO in mind. Make sure your web designer understands the details of one-page SEO. It’s always a good idea to interview a minimum of two firms to understand if they grasp today’s new approach to SEO.

8.) Check the link to your home page throughout your site. Is index.html appended to your domain name? If so, you’re splitting your links. Outside links go to http://www.domain.com and internal links go to http://www.domain.com/index.html.

9.) Set-up a Blog page. Search spiders like sites that are posting fresh content on a frequent basis.  In addition, each post creates a new indexed page which will boost your authority with the engines which enhances your ranking opportunities. Blog at least three times a month with good, fresh content to feed those little crawlers.

10.) When link building, think quality, not quantity. Most marketers are misunderstood that quality links out way the quantity of links on a given site. More important is the type of sites you are linking with.  Sites that are focused and relevant to your business will bear the most fruit.
